Now that RSP season is over for another year, here is a thought. Statistically, most people wait to the very last minute in February to make their contribution. There is a cost to that.
If you were to make your current year contribution in January each year, instead of waiting until February of the following year, you would be way ahead. Getting gains for one extra year on each of your contributions would get you a bunch more money at retirement.
Here is an example. A person starts at 40, makes the maximum contribution each year and earns 5% annually the difference at retirement would be $84,511....pretty much for free.
Lesson to be learned here....contribute early and often!
